Grand Theft Auto V, which launched four years ago in 2013, continues to smash records years after it’s initial released.
Grand Theft Auto V launched September 2013 on PS3 and Xbox 360, November 2014 on PS4 and Xbox One, and finally on PC April 2015. The game has been out a while, but sales for Rockstar Games’ behemoth of a title haven’t slowed down. In fact, four years after the game’s initial release, Grand Theft Auto V continues to post immensely strong sales numbers.
In a series of Tweets, industry analyst Daniel Ahmad confirmed that Take-Two Interactive has sold 90 million copies of Grand Theft Auto V to date across all five platforms. Of that 90 million, 15 million units were sold in 2017 alone. As Mr. Ahmad pointed out, the four year old game managed to outsell most games that launched in 2017, including the controversial Star Wars Battlefront II (7 million units). Grand Theft Auto Online also continued to be a major revenue driver with players continuing to invest more money into the experience. As such, Take-Two confirmed more content updates are coming.
Rockstar’s next game, Red Dead Redemption 2, is scheduled to launch October 26 and comes with its own online component. Based on what’s happened with Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar may be looking at another goldmine.
