Infinity Ward today dropped the first details about their post-launch monetization plans for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

The Call of Duty franchise is no stranger to controversy. Since the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops III, the various studios have approached monetizing their games in different ways, for better or worse. Things came to a head with last year's Black Ops 4, which took things to the extreme. From a Season Pass to loot boxes to a Battle Pass, Black Ops 4 implemented nearly every form of monetization. Due to this, there's been a lot of apprehension over how Infinity Ward would tackle the touchy subject.

In a new blog post, Infinity Ward revealed many of their plans. As previously announced, there is no Season Pass or map packs. Instead, all post-launch maps are free. Functional items, such as base weapons, are unlocked by playing the game. Infinity Ward didn't mention if the new weapons come via ranking up in a Battle Pass system or via challenges like in Infinite Warfare.

Yes, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare employs a Battle Pass system that allows players to view the content they're earning or buying ahead of time. One such reward is CoD Points, which for the first time ever are earnable by playing the game. Much like Black Ops 4, different themed seasons split up each Battle Pass.

Modern Warfare's Battle Pass system offers a Free Stream and a Premium Stream that you'll have to buy into. Infinity Ward didn't mention how players rank up their Battle Pass. If it's like Black Ops 4, players will need to invest about an hour of game time to rank up.

Infinity Ward says there are no loot boxes in the game. Considering how toxic the concept has become, it's the right time to formally retire them from the franchise. Hopefully, Infinity Ward can keep them out of the game forever. After all, Treyarch also promised no loot boxes at first, but then ended up adding them in months after release.

The Battle Pass system won't be available for launch, but will arrive later this year. Considering there's usually a winter event every year for Call of Duty, it would be a safe bet to say it'll arrive in time for that.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is out October 25 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
