It wasn't that far off the first time we got a figure on how well the series' latest had fared. And now, coinciding with Nintendo's latest earnings release, it's now been made official: Metroid Dread is now the best-selling entry in the series. Nearly six months after the game's launch back in October of last year and accounting for sales up to March 31 of this year, Dread has sold approximately 2.9 million copies, according to Nintendo's updated list of million-sellers on the Switch platform. Beating its nearest competitor and the former owner of best-selling title, 2002's Metroid Prime for the Gamecube -- itself having racked up life-time sales of 2.84 million.

Even so, Dread's numbers pale in comparison to the performance of Nintendo's other big-hitters. Themselves, after recent updated figures, shows the likes of Breath of the Wild, Smash Bros Ultimate, Pokemon Sword/Shield and Super Mario Odyssey, roughly nine times (nearing ten times) the life-time sales of developer MercurySteam's acclaimed entrant. Even more recent titles like Kirby and the Forgotten Land -- which only came out at the end of March -- have already sailed past 2.5 million. But for a series that historically has never sold massive amounts, in the context of the series on its own, this is still an impressive showing; to avoid repeating one's self in terms of the praise it's received, let's hope we won't be waiting another decade-plus for Nintendo's next Metroid outing. And yes, that is absolutely taking into account Metroid Prime 4 is out there, somewhere -- however long in development that project might be.
