Microsoft has put the final nail in Kinect's coffin.

Kinect's brief existence ends with one final discontinuation. Microsoft has discontinued the Xbox One Kinect Adapter, which was an essential accessory for Kinect owners who don't own an original Xbox One unit. Xbox One S launched in August 2016 with a Kinect port, as did the Xbox One X in 2017, meaning the only way to use Kinect on the newer models required the adapter.

A Microsoft representative confirmed the discontinuation to Polygon:

“After careful consideration, we decided to stop manufacturing the Xbox Kinect Adapter to focus attention on launching new, higher fan-requested gaming accessories across Xbox One and Windows 10.”

The Kinect's demise has been gradual. Originally launching in 2010, initial sales for the camera peripheral were strong, but quickly declined due to large amounts of shovelware. With Xbox One, Microsoft originally intended to force Kinect on every owners and require it connected at all times. Following backlash, Microsoft walked it back, and, in 2014, removed the Kinect from the package. Since then, the company has discontinued the PC and Xbox One versions. With the adapter gone, Kinect is truly dead as there is no way for current Kinect owners to plug it into their future Xbox consoles.
