Monster Train Developers Shiny Shoe Announce Inkbound

In 2020, developers Shiny Shoe gave us Monster Train, a rather colorful and fun roguelike deckbuilder that ended up being one of the year’s finest games. And now they’re back with a follow-up in the form of Inkbound, itself another roguelike. This time around, though, it’s an online roguelike, a co-op experience, and parts of action-RPG and tactics games all blended together, which is quite ambitious and should certainly make for something interesting, to say the least. You can check out the game’s announcement trailer below, which still contains the kind of vibrant style that helped Monster Train stand out, and looks just as gorgeous here.

The setting in Inkbound is that of The Atheneum, a world containing every story that has ever been written, and players assume the role of the Binders that help maintain these stories or explore unfinished ones even further. So between the world revolving around different kinds of stories and the game wanting to create an online world where stories and even combat can change on a weekly or even daily basis, it certainly has the potential for a lot of intriguing and creative scenarios for our Binder to get involved in. The mix of turn-based and real-time combat, meanwhile, is always a risk, but Shiny Shoe aims to keep turns quick while still allowing players to take their time, as well as letting them experiment with mixtures of different classes. Sounds like another hit, but you’ll have to wait a while to check it out, as Inkbound won’t be out until at least 2023 when it enters Early Access.
