One of the best games this year is doing exceptionally well commercially. Square Enix has announced today through Twitter that NieR: Automata has surpassed 1.5 million copies in physical shipments and download sales.

This is phenomenal for a series that was thought to be nothing more than a niche sub-franchise. While we don't have the numbers, we would wager a guess that Automata has eclipsed the first game in terms of both popularity and sales. Heck, Square Enix has even stated that it surpassed their own estimates during their latest financial report.

NieR: Automata was released March 7 on PlayStation 4, and the following week on PC.
