The NPD Group today announced that the Switch's long run as the top-selling console in the US has ended.

Despite continued shortages that continue to make it hard to get, the PlayStation 5 edged out the Switch to claim the title of best-selling hardware platform in September in both unit and dollar sales. This ends the Switch's mighty 33-month streak, which began November 2018. Since that month, Nintendo's console-handheld hybrid managed to outsell both the PS4 and Xbox One, and later the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in unit sales.

Even with the shortages, the PS5 has continued to perform extremely well against the Switch. Despite Nintendo's platform selling the most units, the PS5 often beat it in dollar sales. Sony's only slip-up was in July where the Xbox Series X|S managed to outperform it in dollar sales.

Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have struggled to remain stocked due to the pandemic-caused chip shortage that's also affecting a wide array of industries. The Switch, meanwhile, uses the more widely available Tegra X1 chip, meaning it's much easier to keep it in-stock than the newer consoles. With the release of the Nintendo Switch OLED Model this month its likely that the Switch will reclaim its mantle in the next NPD report.
