NPD Group: Kingdom Hearts III, Nintendo Switch Topped January Sales Charts

The NPD Group today released their January 2019 report, which saw Square Enix’s action-RPG and Nintendo’s console end up on top.

January 2019 has come and gone, which means it’s time to look at how well the industry did in North America. Overall, sales across the industry decline 19% compared to January 2018, bringing in $893 million.

Hardware was especially hit hard with a decline of 28%. Considering PS4 and Xbox One are entering their fifth year in the market, it isn’t too surprising to see hardware sales slow down. Nintendo Switch, which celebrates its second birthday in March, was the best-selling console of the month and the only one to show growth year-over-year.

On the software side, sales declined by 18% year-over-year. Kingdom Hearts III, Square Enix’s long-gestating project, took the top spot despite launching at the very end of the month. It’s sales were more than two times higher than Kingdom Hearts II’s launch sales. Resident Evil 2 placed second and posted nearly three times the amount of sales are the original Resident Evil 2. Finally, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, a port of the Wii U game of the same name, entered at number three. Sales were 30% higher than the original.

Here are the top-selling games of January 2019:
