Towards the end of 2019, the MLB made the intriguing announcement that the popular PlayStation exclusive series MLB The Show would no longer be restricted to Sony platforms, leaving the door open for Microsoft and Nintendo to introduce an officially licensed baseball game to their consoles.

Last month saw the first results of this new partnership as MLB The Show 21 released not only on PS5 and PS4, but Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One as well, in addition to being available on day one for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. This increased audience certainly seems to have paid off, as the NPD Group has revealed that MLB The Show 21 was the best-selling game of April and the third best-selling game of 2021 so far behind only Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which was the second best-selling game of last month, and Super Mario 3D World. Fellow April releases New Pokémon Snap and Nier Replicant debuted in third and fifth respectively for the month, with Outriders rounding out the top five at number four. The only other new release to cross the top ten was Returnal, which surfaced at eighth.
