Overwatch Testing New ‘Role Queue’ Feature

The Overwatch team has rolled out a new matchmaking feature to the Public Test Realm on PC. This new “Role Queue” feature adjusts the matchmaking process in a way that puts one’s role first. Before a match begins, players choose to play as a tank, support or damage-oriented hero. Once the choice is made, players are then matched into teams comprised of two tanks, two supports and two damage heroes. After the match is over, players will return to the main menu to select another role before the next match starts. To better explain the system and the reasoning behind it, Blizzard has released a new Developer Update video featuring Game Director Jeff Kaplan.

It turns out that this isn’t the only change made in the Public Test Realm. The implementation of Role Queue requires the re-balancing of certain heroes so as to keep them viable in the new matchmaking structure. This sounds like a great change for Overwatch, but it could of course have its drawbacks. Hopefully the positives will outweigh the negatives should Role Queue make it to the game proper.

Overwatch is available on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. See our full review to learn more about the game and what it was like at launch.
