Michael Pachter does not expect the Xbox One price to return to $399. The holiday promotion that was supposed to end in January never ended, the Xbox One is still $349, and that’s where Pachter thinks it will stay.
“On January 16 they said ‘Effective tomorrow we have special promotional pricing of $349.’ It didn’t say temporary, and it didn’t put a date of when it ends, which is really curious,” Pachter told GameInformer.
“It’s not officially a price cut – it’s promotional pricing. This allows the retailer to advertise regularly $399 and now it’s $349, but I have a feeling it will never go back up.”
It makes sense that Microsoft would want to keep the price at $349. The aggressive price cut allowed the Xbox One to finally beat the PS4 in North America for the months of November and December. The NPD report for January 2015 has yet to be released, but should give us an indication of whether or not the price cut has the staying power the Xbox One needs.
