Sony today announced that sales for the PlayStation 4 have surpassed 35.9 million units globally as of January 3, 2016. This was thanks to an amazingly strong 2015 holiday season where more than 5.7 million PS4 units were sold through to consumers.

It wasn't just PS4 hardware that was on fire. Players purchased more than 35 million PS4 games from retail stores worldwide and through digital downloads through the PlayStation Store. PS+ subscriptions rose 60% at the end of 2015 compared to the same period last year. Overall, it was an extremely successful holiday for PlayStation.

"We are absolutely delighted that so many customers have selected PS4 as the best place to play throughout this holiday season and that the PS4 community is growing more than ever," said Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver innovative entertainment experiences, and look forward to bringing an unprecedented games portfolio from third party developers and publishers and SCE Worldwide Studios, including UNCHARTED 4: A Thief's End, New Hot Shots Golf (working title) and The Last Guardian, this coming year."

PlayStation 4 is set to have a big 2016 with the promise of huge AAA exclusives. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and Street Fighter V kick things off in the first half of the year, with Horizon: Zero Dawn, Persona 5, and The Last Guardian rounding out the end of the year.
