The PS5 remains hard to find, and that trend is likely to continue into 2022, according to Sony.

Demand continues to outstrip supply when it comes to the PlayStation 5. Ever since its launch last November, Sony has struggled to get PS5 onto shelves. Every time they do, the consoles are quickly snatched up. Statements from Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment to the Financial Times suggested that supply would get better later this year. That now seems to not be the case.

During the company's recent earnings report, as reported by Bloomberg, CFO Hiroki Totoki told investors that the current situation could extend into 2021. It's not a lack of trying that's the problem. According to Mr. Totoki, the problem is that demand for the consoles is just too high. Even if Sony was able to expand supply, the large amount of demand for the console means it would stay scarce.

Whether or not Mr. Totoki or Mr. Ryan is right, the PS5 continues to sell well. From launch till March 31, Sony sold 7.8 million PS5s and are expecting to produce 14.8 million more through the current fiscal year. Back in April, the NPD Group declared PS5 the fastest-selling console ever in both unit and dollar sales. If Sony continues at its current rate, the PS5 is well positioned to meet and even exceed the PS4's massive lifetime sales.
