EA today announced major changes to the Battlefield series, including the promotion of Respawn Entertainment's Vince Zampella.

Battlefield 2042's rocky launch and poor reception are not deterring publisher EA from making the franchise a cornerstone of their brand. Indeed, EA intends on expanding the franchise into its own universe with multiple games and offerings with studios across North America and Europe contributing. To accomplish this, however, there's been a major shakeup in the composition of DICE.

DICE GM Oskar Barielson is out. Speaking with Gamespot, EA confirmed that he has left the company for other opportunities. Meanwhile, Respawn Entertainment's Vince Zampella has been promoted to overall boss of the Battlefield franchise.

Going forward, development of the Battlefield universe will be overseen by three studios. DICE remains as the main developer, Ripple Effect Studios will work on a 'new experience' in the Battlefield 2042 universe, and a new studio headed up by Halo designer Marcus Lehto that will focus on narrative.

No word yet on what types of games and experiences the three studios are working on post-Battlefield 2042. DICE will release a patch today for the game with more than 300 changes and alterations that, in theory, should help stabilize the experience. As for what this means for DICE's other franchise, Star Wars Battlefront, remains to be seen. Though highly controversial at launch, both Battlefront games grew to be quite popular and many were disappointed after EA and DICE ended support for Battlefront II. Despite that popularity, notable industry leaker Tom Henderson suggested that EA turned down a Battlefront III pitch due to 'licensing costs.'

Battlefield 2042 is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
