Not much is yet known about Nintendo’s next console, NX, but it seems Nintendo is putting many of its eggs into its basket. Although the Wii U has been out just two years, the NX looks to be right around the corner, and now it’s looking to be a very different beast than once thought.
Nikkei (a reputable Japanese business newspaper) has reported (note that you must be a Nikkei subscriber to view the full article) today via an inside source that the console will run on an Android OS. It’s unclear whether or not this means that the console will be handheld in some nature (like a powerful Android tablet), or perhaps some sort of a concept similar to the many microconsoles we’ve seen pop up on the market in recent months the like the Ouya. If it’s indeed the latter, it could mean that the console is not meant as a replacement for the Wii U, but instead a new venture for Nintendo entirely.
The source stated that moving towards Android was the result of third-party publishers quickly abandoning the Wii U, encouraging the company to embrace an open platform to easier allow developers to create content for it.
With Nintendo partnering with DeNA to develop mobile games, this would represent a major paradigm shift for the company.
[UPDATE 6/2 5:03 PM] Nintendo has today stated to The Wall Street Journal that “there is no truth to the report saying that we are planning to adopt Android for NX.”

This small paragraph does not show any link between the Nintendo NX and an Android OS.

The Nikkei article is actually quite long, but unfortunately you must be a subscriber to their publication to view beyond the paragraph preview we linked to. We’ve summed up everything they reported about the NX in this article.
Great, so now the Nvidia Shield TV will have some competition.
yep I can see future consoles also having an Android based operating system like backwards compatibility included also. Co existing. it’s just too huge a market to ignore. Mobile makes billions
Wow.. Nintendo is pretty much giving up in the console race.. They hired a mobile developer to make mobile nintendo games.. and went all mobile next gen.. Wow.. It will fail miserably.. They are going to try and charge an arm and a leg for their “name brand” characters.. and It is going to spell disaster.. Nintendo may be very well on a downward spiral with this choice.. if it is a tablet.. etc..
actually it’s your thinking is what is stuck in the past. mobile is the future whether you like it or not it’s just going to coexist in consoles now. future consoles can have their architecture + support Android the mobile business makes way more money than the console business and Japan is literally Mobile to the extreme. They prefer phones and portables. we in the West still like consoles it’s kind of a 50-50 thing here but over there, mobile majority.
I understand what you want to say with «mobile is the future», what i think you don’t understand is that all games can’t be mobile. I don’t know in japan, but in Europe people buy the tablets and smartphone just because of the free apps and “free games”, and a lots of games just doesn’t will work with micro transitions. I think you already understand my point.
You fail miserably.
Just call me Nintendo.
They could avoid all this if they would just give up on consoles and become a multiplatform thrid party developer instead, I’m sure many people including myself would love to play a true next gen Zelda on PS4
Or you know, the way that games are supposed to be enjoyed…. on a PC.
Actually games are meant to be played on consoles not PC that’s why consoles were invented in the first place.. you know, Pc’s were invented for work internet web browsing programing building etc etc sure it can do gaming and maybe push more pixels than consoles but that’s not the point, games are build for consoles to be played on a big tv with a controller
Actually games are made on a PC first, then ported to a console. You know, PCs were built to be multi-functional devices, which you can “work” or “play” on. That means video games too, you know. Not only that, but the pure power of a PC crushes a console of any kind.
I can’t believe you’re actually having this argument. It’s very 8 year old of you.
I can’t believe you stooped to the level of saying “I can’t believe you’re actually having this argument. It’s very 8 year old of you.”
Nikkei has admitted to guessing on new systems before. This is just a rumor.
Why do people automatically think android os means low end mobile device , who says it can’t run a high end console ?
And yet after June 2015 it will be 5 E3s since the Wii U debuted. You do know that the Wii U was announced at E3 2011 right? So the new one is right around the corner? Sure it is.
i doubt it, it will use what ps4 and xbox one use, specs. probably be alittle better than ps4.
It will probably be worse than current gen consoles, if the last 2 gens of Nintendo consoles is any indication.
hope not, nintendo need to grab more people into it and hopefully make it easier for 3rd parties to port their game faster.
LOL at specs better than PS4. Boy, are you in for a shock. It will likely be less powerful than Wii U.
why would they make a less powerful next system than it’s current system, right now, people are graphcs freak, who go “aww..” and cared a little about either gameplay or story wise.
Nintendead.
Hey, who cares about stuff like graphics and large open worlds when it will have Amiibo support!!
The future of Nintendo is a future I don’t think I want to be part of.
Hopefully Nintendo is making a Tegra X1 Android game console 🙂
If so, I will go back to Nintendo.
I think Nintendo will try to break into the smartphone market because their competitors already have their own line of smartphones.
It’s pretty doubtful considering Nintendo’s history of obsessive anti-piracy and Android’s history of lackluster piracy protection. However, I’m willing to believe that Nintendo will do a lot to gain back market share
Make money with play game
this is insane
