Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Classics Hub Hits Steam – Offers Mods and ROM Hacks

The Sega Genesis/Mega Drive was a huge hit around the world in the late ’80s and into the ’90s. The Sonic the Hedgehog series propelled the console to heights no one could have imagined, and its lineup of incredible first-party games left a lasting impact on players for years to come. The console was one of the first to gain a partial digital archive on Steam, and now that archive has been taken several steps further with the Mega Drive/Genesis Hub area that brings a slew of Genesis classics to players in a new way.

Beyond getting a ’90s bedroom-style overlay for the games, you can also now use Steam Workshop to play revamped versions of games. If you want to enjoy Sonic 1 with Knuckles, which couldn’t happen even with lock-on technology, you can. Other regions’ versions of games can be played using legal ROM too, thanks to ROM hacks that can also be applied to carts on the Retron 5. If you have ever wanted to play Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as it was originally envisioned, with all of Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles playable in one go, you can do so now as well. Given how much good can be done with ROM hacks, and how this setup enables publishers to make some money with them – this is a fantastic start to the concept and those looking to enjoy it can get every Genesis game pack on Steam for $2.55 each through May 1.
