SNK is best known for the Neo Geo console and the stable of characters that came from it, but its been creating games for far longer than that. The company has a gaming history extending back to the late 70s and just about every arcade of the early 80s had a Vanguard machine kicking around somewhere. There were also classics like Ikari Warriors and its sequel Glory Road, while the NES saw the fantastic action-RPG Crystalis. These and many more are making a return in SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, which compiles a huge amount of SNK's pre-Neo Geo history onto a single NISA-published Switch cartridge.

While the collection contains a good chunk of SNK's legacy it's not a completely slavish-recreation, because duplicating the twisting joystick or merciless quarter-munching of arcade machines doesn't really work. Games like Ikari Warriors come with new control schemes that preserve the gameplay while remaining true to its spirit and everything on the collection lets you save anywhere and even rewind. Other titles simply couldn't be updated and these are available in a museum, which features artwork and other arcade promotional materials. While the complete game list has yet to be revealed the ones listed so far are more than enough to get excited for, preserving SNK's history and bringing it back to the present where it belongs.
