According to a report from Gematsu (via PlayStation Japan) Sony has apparently ended the production of the PlayStation 3 in Japan.

According to their story the companies site list,  "the 500 gigabyte standard model, the only remaining PlayStation 3 model in production in Japan, lists shipments as ended.”

The PlayStation 3 was released to a shaky start in 2006 but over time gained its footing in the market to bring gamers a number of high quality releases during the 7th gen before making way for the PlayStation 4 in 2013.
