While PlayStation may indeed still be dominating this generation when it comes to consoles -- be it commercially and critically on the basis of games available for the platform — despite the success of the Nintendo Switch and the slight resurgence of Microsoft’s Xbox platform so far as services go, Sony haven’t done themselves any favours as of late with their refusal to allow cross-platform play on their system. This despite games such as Fortnite allowing players across Xbox, Switch, PC and even mobile devices to come together. The aforementioned game even punishing those whom attempted to play on another platform if they had so much logged a single session with a PS4-affiliated account.

Speaking at the recent IFA Technology show in Berlin, chief executive of Sony, Kenichiro Yoshida, offered a further explanation as to why — despite fairly PR responses that they were "looking into" possible solutions prior — the platform holder continues to wall off PS4 owners from the larger gaming forum. "Our way of thinking is always that PlayStation is the best place to play. Fortnite, I believe, partnered with PlayStation 4 is the best experience for users, that's our belief," Yoshida claimed. "We decide based on what is the best user experience. That is our way of thinking for cross-platform."

That "way of thinking", as Yoshida puts it, isn’t simply limited to popular, trending games like Fortnite though, with other multi-platform titles like Rocket League also being affected by Sony’s refusal for cross-platform play. Even companies like Bethesda have chimed in with claims that the console release of games such as The Elder Scrolls Legends may in fact give PS4 a miss should PlayStation’s attitude remain.
