The NPD Group has confirmed that Marvel's Spider-Man has surpassed Batman: Arkham City to become the best-selling superhero title of all time in the U.S.

Insomniac Games released the critically acclaimed action-adventure title in 2018 and it was met with widespread critical acclaim and commercial success.

NPD Group’s figures, which run through to May, has Spider-Man top the pile in terms of both its physical and digital sales combined.

Rocksteady Studios’ Arkham City and Arkham Knight came second and third respectively, while Traveller's Tales Lego Batman: The Videogame secured the fourth spot.

Arkham City, which initially launched in 2011, was released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, macOS, Wii U, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man, on the other hand, was released exclusively on PS4.

The PS4 exclusive has been on the market for less than a year and has become one of the best-selling titles on Sony’s platform.

In January, Sony had sold nine million copies of Spider-Man across physical and digital releases as PS4 smashed its way past ninety million units sold.

And Spider-Man’s popularity showed last year after it sold over three million copies in its first three days to become the fastest-selling first-party PlayStation title.

The open-world title takes place in New York City and has players taking control of Peter Parker and his alter ego, who must put an end to the threat from the villainous Mr. Negative.

Hardcore Gamer’s review praised the Spider-Man developer for creating the “most realized Spider-Man game yet,” adding that the title “perfectly captures Peter Parker’s comical bravado, all while establishing a world ripe for its own unique expansion.”
