Tetris 99 Gets DLC Enabling Offline Play Ahead of Third Maximus Cup

Tetris 99 has been a gigantic hit since its launch earlier this year and has become a killer app for Nintendo’s online service. Today, Nintendo released the first DLC for the game, enabling offline playback with two modes. The new modes give you CPU Mode, where you can have 98 other CPU-controlled rivals in an offline mode. This is great if you want to keep the last man standing motif alive, but do so on a plane or in a doctor’s office where you can’t have reliable online play. The classic marathon mode also joins the fray, and if you want to enjoy these, it will only set you back $9.99 and allows you to get a good amount of practice in for online play.

This launches right before the third Maximus Cup where people can not only earn $10 eShop cards for doing exceptionally well, but everyone will earn a special theme for the game if they get at least 100 points. The in-game theme is based on the original Game Boy’s Tetris, the version that launched Nintendo’s whole portable lineup and has a direct lineage to the Switch as a result of it being the latest evolution of portable technology. The cup runs from May 17 through May 19, and a single first place finish is all you need to earn the theme.
