Autumn is a relative thing. Toe Jam & Earl: Back in the Groove was announced to be coming out this fall but even a duo swimming in funk can’t ease its way past an inadequate deadline. Either that or developer Humanature meant Australia-fall, in which case everything has gone exactly as planned. Whatever the case may be, Toe Jam & Earl is coming on March 1, returning to lay down the beat for the dorks of Earth for the first time in sixteen years. That’s just a little less than three years since its Kickstarter ended, which isn’t a bad turnaround at all for a crowdfunded project. The new game is a proper sequel to the original 1991 game, as opposed to Toe Jam & Earl 2 and 3 which played very differently. You and a friend or three walk through randomly generated maps looking for goodies and dodging humans who’ve got no chill. It’s pure co-op, with presents shared among players and everyone working towards recovering bits of the crashed spaceship in order to get off this weird rock. It was a classic in the Genesis days and there’s no reason to think it’s lost any charm or playability in the last 27 years.
Toe Jam & Earl: Back in the Groove is coming out for every system under the sun, including PC, Mac, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch. No word on a Genesis version, but seeing as someone made Portal for the Commodore 64 this week it seems like an inevitability.
