History impacts the video game industry in a huge way. Without many of the unfortunate events that have occurred over our written and remembered past, there wouldn't be as many games as there are now. A bulk of those titles are centered around war.

June 28, 2014 marks the anniversary of one of the most monumental events in history. In 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated-- thus setting off the chain events leading to WWI. France and Germany declare war on each other, forcing France to deport German citizens.

In the recently released game, Valiant Hearts: The Great War, the story begin at the moment of deportation. One of the main characters is separated from his wife and forced to enlist in the German army while his father-in-law fought for France. Valiant Hearts' narrative details actual moments from the war. There were families fighting against one another, American volunteers and advancements in warfare.

You could say Valiant Hearts has been in the making for 100 years since it was released only a few days before the century mark of the Archduke's assassination. And while the game is enjoyable we certainly don't wish for history to repeat itself.
