Best Sound Design

Bioshock Infinite

The sound designers at irrational did a lot to make the world of Columbia come alive, with stellar sound effects and voice work used throughout. What really sets the game apart, though, is its use of music. When you run into the barbershop quartet covering God Only Knows at the start of the game, you know you’re in for a treat. Not only have the game’s composers taken some of this century’s greatest music and re-imagined it in turn of the century style, they’ve integrated it into the world beautifully. From the lone black woman sitting by the stocks singing Fortunate Son to the carnivalized version of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun that plays at the beach, it really helps to sell this world out of time. And of course, who can forget Elizabeth’s emotional amateur rendition of Will the Circle Be Unbroken?
