Pillars of Eternity was met with critical acclaim when it was released in 2015, largely due to it being a stellar new RPG that successfully recreated the good aspects of classic PC RPGs. Based on its popularity and reception, when a crowdfunding campaign was announced for its sequel, it met its funding goal in the first day and ultimately quadrupled the target goal. The highly anticipated follow up, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, promises to bring back everything that made its predecessor great while introducing many new features and updates. Being a direct sequel to the original, the player will once again assume the role of the Watcher of Caed Nua, possessing the ability to see into a person's soul and view their memories and past lives.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire will be a return to the beautiful environments of Eora in a new adventure that builds on the original's deep narrative. Eothas, the god of light and rebirth has returned. Eothas was believed to be dead, but being the god of rebirth it really shouldn't surprise anyone that death is nothing more than a temporary inconvenience for him. He now inhabits the body of a stone titan and has been sleeping for thousands of years under your keep, Caed Nua. Gods have a tendency to be angry and seeking vengeance when they return from the dead, and Ethoas is no different. He forces his way out from the underground and smashes your stronghold in the process, leaving you on the brink of death. In order to preserve your soul, you must track down this rampaging god and demand answers, lest the world of men and gods be thrust into chaos.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire will introduce open world sailing and a new dynamic weather system. This sailing system will also allow players to customize their own ship and use it as an aquatic mobile command center. Players will be able to explore the vast world of Eora in pursuit of Eothas and will travel across many destinations and unique cultures. Eora is a living, breathing world where they can become involved with conflicts between locals, trade companies and pirates. The citizens of Eora have their own lives to live, jobs to work, and schedules to follow. The NPCs will follow their routine regardless of where the player happens to be. Because of the level of autonomy the NPCs have, quest opportunities may vary based on time and location.

The relationships formed with companions are important in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, and there are plenty of new companions with new stories that will be introduced to the player. As a direct sequel, some familiar faces like Edér and Aloth will also be present. The companions are deeply intertwined with the fate of Eora, and decisions the player makes will have an impact on their relationships, changing the interactions and can factor into the outcome of the story.

Players who tackled Pillars of Eternity can begin Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire exactly where they left off. The save file can transfer over, allowing the choices the player made in the first game continue to have their consequences felt. Eager fans still have a while to wait before they can get their hands on Deadfire as a release date has not been announced besides 2018, but early data of this title suggests it will be worth the wait for fans of the series.
