A couple weeks ago there was some video game themed event in California that generated a modest amount of media attention, maybe you caught some of the coverage. Bandai Namco had numerous great looking titles on display. Sadly, they had far too many on display to get an in-depth look or spend significant hands on time with all of them in the finite amount of time, but it would be criminal to completely ignore these upcoming titles.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown

This upcoming arcade air fighter was delayed from an initial 2017 release to sometime this year. Originally intended to be a PlayStation 4 exclusive, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown will be flying over to PC and Xbox One, but the PlayStation 4 version will feature exclusive missions for PlayStation VR. Two player local multiplayer is supported and the recently launched trailer can provide a taste of what this game is about.

Code Vein

Code Vein is a vampire themed Soulsborne game set in a post apocalyptic dystopia. The gameplay is what one would expect for the type of game, exploration of a ruined fantasy landscape while fighting vile creatures and dying quite a bit, though not quite as often as I am accustomed to in actual Dark Souls games. Code Vein hits the challenge sweet spot where every time death occurred the desire to jump back in for "one more try" was present, making that really like fifty more tries. The gameplay mechanics actually felt like some Devil May Cry influence was added to the Souldborne template. Learning the behavior patterns of bosses is essential to defeating them, but as anyone who plays old school games knows learning how to outsmart the boss is part of the fun. One unique feature in Code Vein is the AI companion that assists the player. The player can choose from three companions, each one offering aid in a different fashion. Code Vein will be releasing on September 27 in Japan and September 28 worldwide for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

My Hero: One's Justice

Anime themed fighting games seem to be all over the place theses days, and now it's time for the world of My Hero Academia to be the featured setting for one of them. This demo featured nine playable characters for the three on three matches that include Dabi, Midoriya, Bakugo, Todoroki, Stain, Shigaraki, Ochaco, All Might and Toga. At E3 this one looked like it still needed some technical polish but as it's an early demo build that is excusable, though the destructible environments and character designs do make this title look interesting. Depending on someone's level of fighting game experience the combos can be set to manual input for the more experience player or set to automatic for the casual fan. A fun feature is once the main story is complete the player will be able to play through again from the villain's perspective. My Hero: One's Justice is scheduled for a 2018 TBD release date for PC, PlayStation 4, Switch and Xbox One.

Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker

This is one of the more interesting games of capture the flag to be found in a video game, though it is reasonable to assume there will be other modes of gameplay in the final version. The game of Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker that Hardcore Gamer enjoyed was the aforementioned capture the flag, except this two-on-two battle took place in the Naruto universe so running vertically up the sides of skyscrapers to retrieve the flag while trying to beat the living snot out the opposing team members was par for the course. Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker is scheduled for release on August 31 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
