Since it debuted earlier this year, developer Those Awesome Guys' Move or Die has been an amazing multiplayer game indeed, with regular updates and improvements making sure that the quick-paced, randomized action always stays fresh and keeps the players happy (which even the core game alone should easily be able to do, of course). So what can we expect with the next update for the game, due out in the latter half of this month? Well, I met up with producer and designer Nicolae Berbece to find out. The main draw is six new mutators, which include one that has the whole game take place underwater, one that has players randomly drop bombs, and perhaps most interesting of all, VVVVVV Mode.

Yes, VVVVVV Mode. Just like in the beloved indie platforming classic, players will be able to reverse gravity with the push of a button, making things even more chaotic, if that's actually possible with game like this. And this isn't just a cheap knock-off of the game's mechanics or anything, this was added with the actual blessing from VVVVVV's creators. Mind you, this isn't the first time an indie game has played a direct part in a Move or Die gameplay update, as aside from some cameos, the previous Viewers vs. Streamers update had a Heavy Bullets game mode, also inspired by the indie game of the same name (and again with the blessing of the creators). But whereas Heavy Bullets was one kind of mini-game, VVVVVV Mode is a mutator that affects practically all of them.

Sitting down with Nicolae and two other players for a game, and after trying out the new Loot Grab mode also included in the update where the goal is too amass as much treasure in your chest as possible while making sure other players don't steal it (and finding it to be damn fun), I got to experience VVVVVV Mode first-hand when it was selected as a mutator. The classic gravity-switching mechanic naturally worked perfectly in a 2D party game like this, adding an extra layer of strategy to game modes like Stomp, where the goal is to simply jump on your opponents' heads. One you throw in the ability to jump between the ceiling and floor whenever players want, what was once one of more simpler matches suddenly becomes quite a bit trickier, and definitely in a good way.

Afterwards, Nicolae also commented that he would like to have more official indie game mechanics included in the future, along with eventual console releases as well. But for now, the new update itself (which still doesn't have a name as of the time of writing) and all of its modes look like they'll be a blast indeed when they come to Move or Die later this month. That said, do the rest of you have any suggestions for other indie games you'd like to see integrated into the gameplay in some way? Why not let the world know in the comments, then?
