Revealed in late February, Pokémon Black and White 2 marks the first time the franchise has ever produced a sequel to a game. While every entry since the original Red and Blue versions could be considered sequels, each one had new places, people and Pokémon. Pokemon Black and White 2, however, utilizes the framework of the originals while adding a few tweaks of its own.

While information remains scarce, we know the events of the game take place a couple of years after the first Black and White games. You'll choose between a new male or female character as you set off to face your rival (also new). There are a couple of fresh gym leaders including one who specializes in Poison-type and one who utilizes Water. As there are generally only 8 badges to collect, it's unclear if these two have replaced previous leaders. Of course, it's always possible they've decided to increase the amount.

New cities have popped up and some old ones are seemingly covered in ice. It seems likely you will be able to catch some of the older generation Pokémon earlier than you could in the first games. You’ll also be able to catch Pokémon using the Pokémon AR Searcher app if you play the game using the 3DS. The most visible change involves Black and White mascots, Reshiram and Zekrom, who have seemingly merged bodies with another Pokémon, Kyurem.

While releasing a direct sequel to Pokemon is risky, Black and White 2 is shaping up to be an interesting release. We'll keep you posted with updates as announced. Gotta catch 'em all!
