Yes, we know some of you are rolling your eyes right now after capturing a glimpse of this game. It's understandable, we get a ton of retro platformers, '80s homages, and indie games with pixel art these days, usually combining all of the above. But sometimes you just can't help it, because you come across one of these games that just looks so damn impressive that you have to pay attention. And that's where Barcelona-based developers Studio Koba come in with Narita Boy, which today has just begun a Kickstarter campaign to help fund development of the game.

As seen in the trailer below, Narita Boy draws inspiration from the likes of Another World, Tron, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, The Last Starfighter, and more. The game's story itself is a bit meta, with Narita Boy being a game within a game that's a cultural phenomenon. But when the Digital Kingdom is threatened and the Stallion invasion threatens to break down the lines between two worlds, Narita Boy needs to wield the Techno Sword in order to act as the best line of defense possible. A line of defense that, as seen in the trailer below, involves surfing around on floppy disks and riding horses made out of old computers.

That being said, Narita Boy clearly has ambitions when it comes to developing some deep lore, and to say it has some absolutely stunning graphics and animation would be an understatement, and it also shows the potential for a wide variety of gameplay indeed. So if you want to know more about the game's development, it's highly suggested that you check out their Kickstarter page. Studio Koba have set an initial goal of €120,000, with over €18,900 already raised as of the time of writing. If all goes well, it will still take a while for Narita Boy to see a release in December 2018 for all major computer platforms (with console versions as various stretch goals), but hopefully this neon-drenched journey will be worth it.
