EA and DICE today announced the next entry in the Battlefield franchise, Battlefield 2042.

Battlefield 2042 takes the franchise back to the modern era, but with a slight futuristic twist. The game takes place in a near-future world transformed by disorder. The reveal trailer hints as much, playing up natural disasters while also showcasing a mix of modern and slightly futuristic weapons, vehicles, gear, and locations. You'll pilot tanks and jets, call in robotic dogs, and take flight in wingsuits. Announced maps are Orbital, Hourglass, Kaleidoscope, Manifest, Discarded, Breakaway, and Rene.

Unfortunately, the Battlefield 2024 reveal trailer continues a dreadful trend all EA games follow. The trailer is entirely made up of game engine footage and unable to provide a real sense of how the game actually looks and plays. We'll have to wait until June 13 for the gameplay reveal. Rumors suggest that the game will show up during the Xbox E3 2021 showcase.

Battlefield 2042 launches October 22 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The next-gen and PC versions will support up to 128 player matches. The PS4 and Xbox One versions will be capped at 64 players.
