Far Cry 6, the latest entry in Ubisoft's long-running open-world series, was set to come out earlier this year, but suffered some delays alongside a number of Ubi's other titles. As we haven't have any actual gameplay footage yet, though, there arguably wasn't much to get hyped for to begin with (well, outside of Giancarlo Esposito playing the game's main villain, Antón Castillo, and a focus on their teenage son, Diego). But now Ubisoft have not only announced a new October release date for the game, but also premiered some new trailers showcasing some of the gameplay, and it looks like they're hopefully bring more new life into the franchise in various ways.

The first trailer, though, introduces us to our new protagonist, Dani Rajos. Switching back to a voiced and named protagonist after Far Cry 5's deputy, Dani's situation seems to be unique because in contrast to previous protagonists who were outsiders thrown into various worlds of madness, they're a native to the fictitious Caribbean nation of Yara, where the game takes place. Dani is a military dropout who's finally taking action against Castillo after they had several of their friends and loved ones killed (as is par for the course when it comes to most Ubisoft protagonists) and when Castillo's sadistic rule starts taking things even further. So they hook up with Libertad, a revolutionary group, who we're introduced to here, including their leader Clara.

The other major character revealed today, though, is ex-KGB spy and guerrilla master Juan Cortez, who helps show off the gameplay and a deeper look at Yara in the second trailer via their "Rules of the Guerilla." Rule number one shows us the safe havens Libertad uses, which include training, mini-games, and even vehicle customization, among other things. Rule number two is about knowing Yara itself and the various ways of getting around it, which include using secret paths, bribes, sabotage, or even just hiding your weapons and hoping no one recognizes you. Yara does look like a more complex nation with Castillo's army controlling everything, after all, which should hopefully make for a nice change of scenery.

Rule Number Three, though, is the emphasis on the “resolver” spirit, a philosophy of resourcefulness that encourages Dani to make use of whatever they can get their hands on in order to make for unorthodox solutions...and weapons. That means you can make a minigun powered by a motorcycle engine, electrified weapons charged by car batteries, or yes, even a weaponized compact disc launcher that shoots copies of "Macarena" which play, just in case you didn't believe the headline (though the press release suggests it may be limited to a pre-order bonus, which if true, not cool). Oh, and there are attack dachshunds and possible attack alligators to command, just in case things weren't crazy enough.

Far Cry 6 comes out on October 7 for (takes breath) XSX, XB1, PS5, PS4, Stadia, Luna, and the PC via Epic games Store and the Ubisoft Store, and will also be a part of the subscription service Ubisoft+. After Far Cry 5 ended up being a bit contentious, largely due to its villains and ending (without spoilers, there's no clue yet how that will factor into this game's story, if at all), it should be interesting to see if Far Cry 6 can actually break the mold a little while still keeping what made earlier games such a success.
