Injustice 2 is adding Gear, a new way for players to customize their fighters and evolve their play style.

NetherRealm Studios has never been afraid to try out new mechanics in each of their games, and Injustice 2 isn't any different. The follow-up to Injustice: Gods Among Us looks to change how character customization works by giving players more choices. The Gear System adds this new layer of customization and choice by allowing players to evolve their play style.

Gear is handed out generously by just playing the game, and each piece provides unique stat bonuses. Completing an entire set of Gear yields even more bonuses, and new special moves. When combined with different shaders, Gear can dramatically alter a character's appearance. NetherRealm does stress that the stat bonuses will not be present in ranked multiplayer matches. Instead, Gear will merely be cosmetic when participating in multiplayer. Even with Gear present, players will still be able to utilize skins to give their characters different costumes.

Injustice 2 is out May 16 on PS4 and Xbox One. There are 27 confirmed fighters (28 if you count the pre-order DLC character, Darkseid), which means there are going to be plenty of Gear sets for players to unlock.
