Well, it's officially the fourth anniversary of Nintendo's E3 announcement of Metroid Prime 4. And at their Nintendo Direct presentation today during E3, we were all expecting/hoping for an update on the game. They were quick to reassure us that it was still in development, but to tide us over, they had another Metroid game to give us. Cut to a trailer showing Samus and the title of...Metroid 5??? Then cut to footage of classic 2D Metroid gameplay, with the reveal that this is the fifth entry in the main series after the original game, Return of Samus, Super Metroid, and Fusion. It's name? Metroid Dread.

No major plot details have been revealed yet aside from Samus exploring a new planet and being hunted by a research robot for the Galactic Federation called the E.M.M.I. (seen as a pretty ominous figure in the trailer below), although a development history video from Producer Yoshio Sakamoto (also below, and also discussing some more gameplay details) says that this will be the conclusion to the story arc of the relationship between Samus and the Metroids. As we can also see, the parts where Samus is being hunted will factor heavily into the gameplay as well. This is a all still a pretty big deal, having been nineteen years between these games, an even longer gap than the one between Metroid Prime 3 and 4 (for now). With some assistance from developers MercurySteam (best known for Samus Returns), Metroid Dread comes out shockingly soon on October 8, and will have a special edition and accompanying amiibo figures alongside its release as well.
