Planescape Torment: Enhanced Edition Coming Really Soon

Some games are just classics the minute they hit the shelves. Multiple award winner, and arguably the greatest PC RPG game ever made, Planescape: Torment, is one of the few games that stands the test of time, due to its writing and morally gray world. Set in a realm that connects the various worlds of Dungeons & Dragons, like so much grisly sinew, players took the role of a newly resurrected being, The Nameless One, and set forth on a quest filled with grim humor and deep storytelling. Only the ravages of time has kept this title from remaining a mainstay on whatever computer I am currently running.

Meanwhile, Beamdog has made a name for itself by taking classic PC RPGs and giving them a reverential treatment, making them playable on modern devices and adding quality of life improvements to enhance the experience while protecting the core mechanics to keep the experience faithful to the original. Both the Baldur’s Gate series, as well as Icewind Dale, has greatly benefited from the work this studio does.

Thus, it is with great surprise and enthusiasm that today’s announcement of Beamdog’s Planescape: Torment Enhanced Edition finds this writer. Rebuilt to support 4k displays and a remastered soundtrack to better underscore the world is one thing, but the studio is also adding in things like tab highlighting, area zooming, combat log, and quickloot among others. For those who feel that these changes will hamper the experience, these can be turned off to play the game as originally designed. Considering that the studio is working in conjunction with Chris Avellone, Lead Designer for the original, there shouldn’t be any worry of the title’s vision being compromised. For both returning players and the uninitiated, this version provides the perfect opportunity to explore Sigil in all of its disgusting glory when it releases April 11 for PC, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS.
