So, when the notice for this first came down the pipe, I thought it was a typo. With Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope in Early Access, I had assumed that there was more news regarding that. I was wrong: the inaugural Sam experience has just dropped on Steam Early Access in VR form under the title Serious Sam VR: The First Encounter. This is something I can get behind! The original Croteam game was chock full of tense encounters and heavy weaponry to solve them. A VR version of that is something far more than the gallery shooters we've been seeing.

Based on the trailer, this doesn't appear to be a simple matter of dropping the original title into a VR headset and calling it a day. Instead, the game has been reworked to use motion controls, allowing the dual aiming found in The Last Hope. Even so, it still offers the full range of movement found in the classic 2001 release (and 2009 HD re-release). This means that all of those folks boasting ironclad stomachs will get the full range VR title that they have been wanting. I personally believe that I can take it as I will have direct control of Sam. Time will tell...

A couple of other things: this version will experience 16 player co-op through the campaign. I could be mistaken, but I believe that is a first for a VR title, and will be impressive to see in action. Also, this Early Access launch features a discounted price for owners of Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter and/or Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope. Owners of HD will get 10% off, while The Last Hope people get 20%. These discounts do stack, so people with both will receive 30% off the price.
