Square Enix put up a teaser site earlier this week for something called "Project Code Z" and rumors began to circulate as to what sort of title they were preparing us for. Considering the company's impressive library of games and willingness to try out new IPs occasionally, there were any number of interesting titles that they could have been teasing so anticipation was high. And then Square Enix made armpit fart noises for five minutes, laughed in our face, and told us the new title would be a game inspired by Spelunker titled Minna de Spelunker Z. This decision was made after much consideration and the fact that Square Enix employees seem to find sustenance in tears of disappointment.

Spelunker is an old NES title that has aged about as well as a used diaper, but from the trailer they put together this looks to be more like a cheap knockoff of the vastly superior Spelunky. Considering how enjoyable Spelunky was, perhaps there is some small speck of hope left in you that Square Enix might also be able to put together a worthy re-imagination of the NES title. Let me extinguish that for you right now by telling you that this game will also be free-to-play. They haven't yet delineated how exactly they plan on holding you by your ankles and shaking every last cent free from your pockets, but the fact that the game is free to start off with basically guarantees there will be some shakedown coming later on if you actually want to win the game.

Spelunker Z will be coming exclusively to the PS4 in Japan on March 19. Consider this exclusive a major win for Microsoft.
