Developer Supermassive Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment have released a new behind-the-scenes video for the upcoming horror title The Inpatient.

The Inpatient director Nik Bowen and executive producer Pete Samuels talk about the “different kind of horror” that players are set to experience, as well as the importance of building the title using PlayStation VR.

According to Samuels, the PSVR headset and PlayStation Move allows The Inpatient’s development team to “fully immerse the player in [...] how they use that to pick objects up, pass them hand to hand so it actually feels totally natural.”

“We use the velocity of the objects involved to tailor the vibration to your expectation,” Bowen told the PlayStation Blog. “This is why running your hand against a wall feels drastically different to punching it -- it’s amazingly realistic.”

When he was asked about The Inpatient’s audio, Bowen said that it was “critical to the experience.”

First announced at E3 2017, The Inpatient is a prequel to Supermassive Games’ critically acclaimed Until Dawn. It takes place 60 years before the events of Until Dawn, with players taking control of an amnesia-suffering patient at Blackwood Sanatorium.

Hardcore Gamer recently went hands-on with The Inpatient at PlayStation Experience, where we found that “There’s one more layer of immersion beyond the PSVR headset. When choosing between dialogue options, you may opt to speak them out loud. This bit of impromptu acting is awkward, but also surprisingly entertaining.” Read more in our preview.

The Inpatient is scheduled for release in North America on January 23 and in Europe on January 24, 2018, exclusively for PlayStation 4.
